While this game was created as a matching game, it would be so easy to think up new ways to use these cards to reinforce what your learner is practicing.

Concentration or Matching Game

One of the simplest ways to use these cards is for a rhyming matching or concentration game.  Cut the cards have your learners match the pictures that rhyming.  Make it a concentration game by having learners turn the cards upside down and flipping the cards to make matches.

Find the Rhyme

Get your learners up and moving around by playing this Find the Rhyme game.  This game is perfect for a small group activity or literacy center activity.  Separate the rhyming cards by posting one rhyme around the room and giving a rhyme or a few to your learners.  Have your learners search the room to collect their rhyme.

What’s the Word?

Since most of these rhymes are CVC words, it is great practice for encoding words.  Give your learners a piece of paper and have them fold it multiple times to create a chart.  Have them use a rhyming card and write the sounds they hear in each word.
