A Space Unit Every Early Learner Will Love

This post may contain affiliate links.  Please read our disclosure here.

Get a child to talk about space, and you will have them gabbing for hours! Their little minds are intrigued with what’s beyond Earth. Bring engaging activities to your classroom and you’ll have them glued every single day! My Travel to Space unit will spark the imagination of your classroom that they will beg to learn more every day.

Whole Group Activities

Introduce this space unit with some fun, engaging whole group lessons. Whole group resources include an interactive poem, word cards for your classroom word wall, tracing pages for students to complete during morning work and table sign in sheets.

Along with circle time activities, I’ve included a list of books below you can read to your class. Each book includes a fun activity to complete.

My favorite part of this entire unit is this next activity! Of course, your students will love it just as much. This book, Me and Space, is a great activity to use to introduce the sun, moon, starts and planets. And each learner in your room will feel like an astronaut when they complete this activity!

Each page of this book focuses on something new about space!

Math and Literacy Centers

If you’re familiar with my thematic units, you’ll know that every unit includes several literacy and math centers that are focused on that specific theme. I’ve spent time studying and analyzing new state curriculum and found that this time of year, kindergarten students are focusing on a lot of new skills. However, we still need to spend time practicing old skills to keep our brains working. Centers are perfect for this because it is an independent activity.

Math centers focus on:

  • Counting up to twenty
  • Counting down from twenty
  • shape sorting
  • Number sense to twenty- counting, building, and writing numbers

Literacy centers focus on:

  • Letter recognition and initial sound
