Do you ever find yourself scrambling to pull together plans for a unit?  There are so many ideas on Pinterest and sending home a backpack of papers that will end up in the trash is just not an fun option.  A lapbook may be the solution you’re looking for!

Integrated Science Unit

Some of the science units that I teach throughout the year have multiple standards included in one single unit. From a scientific investigation into a life science study, there are a variety of skills that can be incorporated when teaching a single theme.  Apples are a perfect example!  And with that, an apple science lapbook is a perfect addition!

Seasons of an Apple Tree

When exploring the Earth and space standards with learners we study how the weather and seasons change throughout the year.  Using an apple book that incorporates the changes that an apple tree goes through during the seasons of the year is a perfect way to include this standard in an apple unit.

For this portion of the apple science lapbook, learners cut, color and glue torn paper to show the apple tree through the year.  Once they are done we attach it to our book with a brad.  You can also tie the circles together with string to have a drop-down book.

Life Cycle of an Apple Tree

The life cycle of a plant is a skill we study throughout the year.  This helps the learners to have a better understanding of organisms and the environment.  Teaching this skill during thematic units also allows the learners to be engaged with the concept we are learning.

For this portion of the lapbook learners color, cut and glue the center portion onto the lapbook. They can leave the page as is or fold the different stages down and unfold as they review the apple tree’s life cycle.

Parts of an Apple

Who doesn’t love to cut open an apple with little ones?  Usually, this is the first unit of the year for us to look into the different parts of a plant.  An apple is so easy to show and discuss how each part of an organism has a purpose to help it survive.

For this portion of the lapbook, learners look at real life apples.  Then they color, cut and label the parts after we do the same thing on chart paper together.

Apple Facts

This portion of the lapbook is one of my favorite sections.  It isn’t as cute or colorful as the rest of the book.  But, I like to see what kids take away from our unit of study together.  It is so interesting to see what each learner found to be important.  Especially as we are still getting to know them at the beginning of the year.

Simply draw or write what they learned, cut, fold and glue onto the book.  Super easy!

Apple Vocabulary Words

Every thematic unit I use with my learners includes vocabulary words.  Incorporating vocabulary into a unit not only helps them to better understand the content but helps to build the knowledge they need as they learn in the future.

Many little learners may lack the background knowledge or experience that their peers have.  By including and discussing the vocabulary of a unit their knowledge and comprehension is making tremendous gains.

Grab Your Apple Lapbook

A lapbook is a fun and engaging way to help your students learn and allow them to continue learning as they share their lapbook with others.
