Fall Activities to Encourage Literacy

This post may contain affiliate links.  Please read our disclosure here.

Fall is my absolute favorite season of the year.  It means no more one hundred degree days, shorter days and outside colors changing (a little…remember…I’m in Texas!).  Fall is also a great time to take learning outside to experience the changes taking place.  However, there are a ton of rainy days that keep learning indoors.  These fall activities that encourage literacy are perfect for those rainy, fall days!

Close Reading with Fletcher and the Falling Leaves

I find that implementing close reading with new readers is a great way to teach not only fluency, but reading skills and comprehension!  Fletcher and the Falling Leaves is one of my favorite fall themed picture books. I adore the main character and how he interacts with the changes that happen in his forest during the fall.  My learners are able to see fall from a different perspective and become enlightened on why the changes during autumn are so important for the animals.

I hated to spend so little time on this great read aloud so I incorporated close reading so we could really dig into the characters, setting and plot. Check out my post and grab the free close  reading printables for this great read aloud!

Rhyming Acorns Matching Game

Fall is around the time where we focus on rhyming skills, so this rhyming acorns matching game is another great fall activity that encourages literacy skills!   This activity can be used with pre-k and kindergarten learners.  Add a little sensory items to a bin along with the acorns for a full on fall activity!

Fall Foods Pocket Chart Sentences

Fluency is such an important skill for early readers.  Re-reading sentences and phrases help them recognize words, spelling patterns and phonics patterns, and help increase the speed they read.  Fall brings on so many new colors and so much food–why not combine them both and create a Fall Foods reading activity!

Fall Emergent Reader

Emergent readers are great for very beginner readers.  They are books that are used in a small group setting where the teacher can work closely with students.  Alot of the words are not read independently, but they are a great introduction to thematic type words.  And the pictures are a great clue to use when reading.  My Fall Emergent reader is all about the different colors that we see during the fall season!  Have students color each page before coming to your small group table!
