When it comes to classroom lessons, fire safety may not always be top of mind, but it’s a critical skill for young children to learn. In pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade, students are just beginning to understand how to stay safe in different situations. It’s important to introduce fire safety early. This will help teach them life-saving strategies in a way that’s interactive and easy for them to grasp. These fire safety activities are just what you need to introduce these safety skills!

The Importance of Using Fire Safety Activities

Let’s be honest. Fire safety is something that can easily be swept under the rug. You are behind on math, you have to meet with your reading groups a little longer. It’s so easy to just move it to the next week. And then the next week.

There are tons of reasons why you don’t have to teach it. However, there are tons of reasons why you should teach it.

  • Builds Early Awareness: Fire Safety introduces them to the importance of recognizing dangerous situations and how to respond appropriately.
  • Promotes Emergency Preparedness: Young children often panic during emergencies. However, fire safety lessons teach them how to stay calm and follow directions. That could save lives in a real situation.
  • Empowers Students with Life Skills: Learning basic fire safety procedures empowers students with knowledge that can be applied both at school and home.
  • Develops a Sense of Responsibility: It fosters responsibility by teaching them not to play with dangerous items like lighters or matches.
  • Creates a Safe School Environment: Fire safety lessons in the classroom contribute to a culture of safety.

Fire Safety Unit

This Fire Safety Activities unit is just what you need! I always love starting the day with a book! Books are a great way to integrate literacy while my students learn more about fire safety! We start each day with this shared reading poem. It’s a great way to learn about fire safety while working on fluency and word recognition.

Next, read together this simple and engaging interactive poem about fire safety. This is another activity that helps students build fluency while learning important safety tips. As they change out words in the poem and practice reading aloud, they reinforce key concepts in a memorable way.

This unit is full of other literacy activities such as an emergent reader on fire safety steps as well as illustrated word cards for a word wall!

Firefighter Labeling Activity

Get hands-on with a labeling activity where students label a diagram of a firefighter and the tools they use. This visual activity not only teaches about firefighters’ gear but also strengthens vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Harmful and Helpful Ways to Use Fire

With this next activity, I want my students to understand that fire isn’t always bad. We discuss ways that fire can be helpful, while we compare ways that fire can be harmful. This activity encourages students to think critically about fire safety in various contexts.

Fire Investigation Using a Candle

For a bit of science, conduct a fire investigation using a candle. This experiment gives students a hands-on opportunity to observe fire behavior in a safe, controlled environment. It’s a great way to introduce basic scientific concepts related to fire.

Looking for a way to bring all these activities into your classroom? This fire safety resource includes everything you need to engage students in learning about fire prevention and safety.
