Gingerbread Math Mats for Little Learners

Creating opportunities for your learners to explore numbers is so important.  The majority of learners are most successful when they are able to manipulate objects when being taught a new math skill.  These gingerbread mats are the perfect way to help your learners compose the number five.

Composing Numbers

Composing numbers up to 5 is an important foundational skill in early learning.  When learners are able to see how numbers can be represented in different ways they are better capable of developing a strong number sense.

To teach this, we start with the gingerbread composing number mats that have the colored peppermints included.  The learners count or subitize the peppermints and either write or use the number cards to make the equation.  They may then record the equation on the printable.

Differentiation

Another way we practice composing the number five is using the black and white mat and allowing the learners to create their own equation.  They can use the peppermints to create two addends and record the equation by writing the numbers or using the number cards.

Both of these activities are a great way to build a foundation is composing and decomposing numbers.  Place value, addition, subtraction and all number sense activities will be easier for the learners to understand.
