One of my favorite thematic units to teach in the classroom is farm. There is so much to teach and a ton of ways to incorporate standards into your instruction. I have a variety of farm books to choose from for our unit, but my new favorite is our interactive farm book.
I just recently introduced these interactive books and love how my learners are enjoying them. They are able to “read” the words and then match the missing words to the correct page. It is perfect hands-on practice with our thematic word wall and makes them feel so big to be reading a book on their own.
The prep work for these books are easy and go along perfectly with some Netflix or Thursday night television! I was able to create 3 different thematic interactive books in less than 20 minutes and they will be used year after year.
Materials
All you need to create this interactive farm book is…
- a photo album from the dollar store
- Velcro strips
- FREE Farm Interactive Reader printables
- laminator and laminating sheets
Step 1
First, print the pages and get your laminator ready. You will only need to laminate the Farm Word Mat and the Farm Word Cards…easy peasy!! Then, cut out the mat and the word cards.
Step 2
Next, cut out the pages of the book. There will be a title, 12 pages with words and 12 pages without words. You can insert the pages into the photo album. If you get the photo album that holds 48 pictures, you can insert the pictures on the right side of each page and they should fill up the album.
Step 3
Time for some Velcro! I grabbed the sticky back strips of Velcro and cut very small pieces with my Elmers X-Acto trimmer to speed up the process. Yes, it does get the trimmer sticky, but nothing a little Goo-Gone can’t handle.
Step 4
Once, the Velcro is cut I attach the soft side to the word card and CUT the other side in half. One pieces goes on the word mat and the other piece goes in the book. Repeat the process with all the words and you’re DONE!
Your learners can use the word mat to match the missing words in the book after reading the first 12 pages of the farm animals.
Another amazing feature is that your learners are able to self check. Not sure if they chose the correct word? They can look in the front section of the book, find the page number and check to see if they used the correct word card.
I hope that this book adds a little extra excitement to your farm unit and that your learners are able to practice their concepts of print and vocabulary with this hands-on resource. You can find more interactive readers in my monthly center packs (some are available now and others will be coming soon!)
