Little Snowman Printable Book

Teaching little learners to read can be easily done with simple emergent readers.  These texts are simple and repetitive for young readers to practice common words and word patterns while using picture clues as they read.  My little reader enjoyed learning about the sight word “little” and building a snowman with this fun Little Snowman printable book.

Circle Time

Before we began reading the text, we read and discussed the title together.  We worked together to determine the work ‘little’ and he was able to use the picture to read the word ‘snowman’.

As we began reading we used our sounds to read the first words and reviewed our sight word ‘little’.  The picture clues on the page helped him to determine the last word in the sentence.  After reading, he traced the word ‘little’ and colored the picture.

The book continued in the same repetitive pattern which made it easy for him to read and gave him confidence as he read the story on his own.  After each page, he continued to trace ‘little’ and color the picture.

The last page was different than the rest of the book, I let him figure out that the words were not the same on his own.  This allowed me to know that he was able to determine he was reading incorrectly and we worked together to read the new text.

Knowing that the words did not visually match what he was saying helped me know that he was not reading from memorization, but looking at the words as he read.  If you learner continues to read the text as the rest of the book this presents a great opportunity to discuss that the words make sense to the meaning of the story, but the words do not look the same as the rest of the book. You can also write out the words “I need..” and “Here is…” and discuss how we know these words are different.
