Making Five Math Game

This post may contain affiliate links.  Please read our disclosure here.

Preschool math is a building block to skills learners are expected to perform in elementary school.  Counting, one-to-one correspondence, and number sense are necessities in early childhood classrooms.  Teachers can help learners explore number sense by using hands-on materials and engaging math games.  This making five math game is perfect for a fun number sense activity.

Gumball Math

If you know MJCS, you know I love my thematic resources.  But math activities that can be used throughout the year are perfect for small group instruction.  Small group instruction in preschool?  Yes!

Have learners visit a teacher or aide as they go through math centers.  Not all learners are on the same level.  And this gives teachers the ability to differentiate the activity for each group.

Hands-On Math

Grab some two-sided counters, a jar, dry erase markers and the printables at the bottom of this post.   Have learners count five counters to place inside the jar.

Then learners can shake and drop the counters on the gumball machine.

Next, learners can sort the counters and place them on the five frame.  For this stage of composing the number five, have learners verbally tell you the amount they see of each set.

Learners can begin writing the values of each as them become aware of the different ways to form five.

Making It Count

Finally, learners can show their results by coloring the printable to represent their gumballs.  By documenting their results, they are able to see the different ways five can be composed.

Making 5 and 10

Need more math?  My Number Sense to Ten Math Pack has more resources for creating numbers.  This pack includes resources for whole group, small group, math centers and independent practice.

Learners will be able to explore their numbers to ten in a variety of ways.  The resources will help to give learners a better understanding of the numbers we use in math.
