Introducing Measurement Activities for Little Learners

This post may contain affiliate links.  Please read our disclosure here.

I love teaching this unit! Measurement is a new and exciting skill for kindergarten students, so there is no doubt they look forward to a math lesson every day.

There are so many benefits to this unit:

  • it provides skills to compare an object to another.
  • measurement helps students understand that everything can be measured with the right tool.
  • students learn how to incorporate every day tasks using measurement.

You Need a Strong Math Block

For any kind of math unit, you need a strong math block to make sure that everyone is taking advantage of the learning time. In a math block, you might find the following:

  • Mini lesson activities
  • Math centers
  • Independent practice
  • Visuals around the room

A Mini Lesson that Counts

Mini lessons are where the introduction to a new unit happens. They are short in time, but full of important information and modeling. To make sure you get the most of your short time, include engaging activities as well at your favorite books over math topics. Here are some of my favorite books over measurement:

There are many options for mini lesson activities. Make sure it’s engaging and relevant to your learners and they will enjoy your mini lesson each time! Another great option for mini lesson activities are Measure and Compare Math Meetings. Use this measurement chart to choose an object to measure. Objects may be measured by weight, length, and capacity with standard or nonstandard measurement tools. Once complete have learners compare size by choosing an object that is bigger or smaller.

Math Centers that Matter

While you’re at your teacher table with small groups, make sure the rest of the class is doing their part. Include engaging math centers to your math block to ensure that the rest of the class is practicing measurement. I prefer adding activities to my math centers that we worked on previously in small groups. This will reduce the number of times students have to ask questions and guarantees you more time with the small group in front of you.

Independent Work to Assess

Now is the time to see what they learned and if you need to reteach anything! Assessments don’t have to be formal. Any independent activity can be counted as an assessment. I provide manipulatives that will help with success, and give them quiet time at any place in the room to complete the activity.

Visuals Around the Classroom

Visuals play a huge part in the learning process for any new unit. Kids are mostly visual learners, so having the appropriate resources at their fingertips is so important. Include measurement visuals at your teacher table, on your walls and in your math centers to help students problem solve with ease!
