How I Became a Pirate

Pirates have green teeth—when they have any teeth at all. I know about pirates, because one day, when I was at the beach building a sand castle and minding my own business, a pirate ship sailed into view. So proclaims Jeremy Jacob, a boy who joins Captain Braid Beard and his crew in this witty look at the finer points of pirate life by the Caldecott Honor–winning illustrator David Shannon and the storyteller Melinda Long. Jeremy learns how to say “scurvy dog,” sing sea chanteys, and throw food . . . but he also learns that there are no books or good night kisses on board: “Pirates don’t tuck.” A swashbuckling adventure with fantastically silly, richly textured illustrations that suit the story to a T.

Tiny Travelers: Let’s Be…Pirates!

Let’s go on an adventure with Tiny Travelers Jack, Ella, Noah, Izzy, and their cat, Lucky, as they set sail on the high seas to find the buried treasure! Your own tiny traveler will love to join them on their journey, and follow the clues to find the treasure in this amazing interactive book. There’s a letter to read outlining their quest, a fold-out treasure map, a fabulous pop-up pirate ship, and more to inspire imagination and encourage creative play in all would-be pirates.

The Skeleton Pirate

The Skeleton Pirate is the Terror of the Seas, and he’ll never be beaten! That is, until he gets beaten by an unruly bunch of pirates and is thrown overboard. Down in the depths of the sea, he is rescued by a beautiful mermaid, only to be swallowed by a whale. But the whale has a tummy ache from all the other things he has swallowed — like a golden ship full of treasure. With echoes of Pinocchio and Treasure Island, this picture book is full of humor and irrepressible energy, a perfect adventure for little would-be pirates.

Pirate Boy

“What if I want to be a pirate and sail away on a pirate ship?” Danny asks his mom. She will be sad; but if Danny doesn’t like it and wants to go home, she will come to the rescue, even if she has to ride on a dolphin, battle sea monsters, and wield a bottle of pirate-shrinking spray to do it! Young readers will love this adventurous and ultimately reassuring tale of a mother’s love.

Pirates Love Underpants

Grab your peg leg and your parrot—and don’t forget the underpants! This wacky picture book pairs pirates and underwear in an uproarious adventure. This laugh-out-loud Underpants adventure is full of pirates, sharks, and treasure. You’ll be yo-ho-ho-ing with hilarity until the pirates conclude their zany expedition!

Berenstain Bears Pirate Adventure

Ahoy bear, matey! Join the Berenstain Bears in another exciting addition to the classic New York Times bestselling series as they embark on a high seas adventure full of cannonballs, scallywags, and—of course—treasure! X marks the spot for Captain Cub, Brown Bear the Pirate, and Honey Bones on the isle of their imagination.

Pirates Don’t Change Diapers

When the pirate crew turns up at Jeremy Jacob’s house and accidentally wakes his baby sister, that wee scallywag howls louder than a storm on the high seas. Sure, there’s buried treasure to be found, but nobody’s digging up anything until Bonney Anne quits her caterwauling. So, quicker than you can say “scurvy dog,” Braid Beard and his swashbuckling pirates become . . . babysitters? Blimey! This hilarious companion to How I Became a Pirate reveals that minding the nursery can be even more terrifying than walking the plank–especially if you’re a pirate.

Pirates: Dead Men’s Tales

Ahoy, there! Get set for a thrilling voyage as you explore pirates throughout history and across the globe. Who were the real pirates of the Caribbean—and beyond? Find out! Pirates: Dead Men’s Tales brings us face to face with some of the most villainous and scurrilous rogues ever to sail the seven seas. Travel from North Africa to the China Seas to meet the notorious Blackbeard, the fearsome Barbarossa brothers, and the women pirates Mary Read, Anne Bonny, and Zheng Shi. With five sumptuous maps, themed spreads, and true tales of a pirate’s daily life, this book takes you on an epic adventure.

Pirates Go to School

A funny rhyming story about the silly things pirates do when they go to school. Pirates and their parrots go to school, and it’s time to hang up their swords and have fun. They learn reading and math, and they bring pirate treasure for show-and-tell. For pirates, going to school is as much fun as a game of “walk the plank”!

Pete the Cat and the Treasure Map

New York Times bestselling author and artist James Dean brings us a fun, epic sea adventure with Captain Pete in Pete the Cat and the Treasure Map! Includes over 30 fun stickers. When Captain Pete discovers a treasure map, he and his crew are ready to set out and sail the seas to find the buried gold and jewels. But they weren’t expecting to find a giant sea monster along the way!

The Pirate and the Firefly

Oliver loves pretending to be a pirate, but learns that blindly following others doesn’t leave him with a good feeling inside. In this Scripture adventure, kids join Oliver as he rights the wrongs done by his so-called pirate friends. Through it all, Captain Oliver learns that following God’s way is the true way to wisdom! The second book in the Firefly Chronicle series brings entire sections of Scripture to life via imaginative, fantastical stories that use a passage from Psalms to help children understand and apply biblical truths to their lives.

Tough Boris

Boris von der Borch is a mean, greedy old pirate–tough as nails, through and through, like all pirates. Or is he? When a young boy sneaks onto Boris’s ship, he discovers that Boris and his mates aren’t quite what he expected.

How to be a Pirate

Little landlubbers get to earn their sea legs on a pirate ship amidst the goofiest pirates ever. There’s lingo to learn (Gangway! Blimey! Yo-ho-ho!), a pirate look to choose (Pick a parrot for your arm. Every pirate’s lucky charm!), and most importantly, pirate rules to learn (No more toothpaste! Farewell, bath! Once ye choose the pirate path!).This rollicking read-aloud will be a hit among boys, girls, and parents alike!

The Pirate Pig

Who needs a treasure map when you have a pirate pig with a nose for gold? Stout Sam and his deckhand, Pip, find a pig washed up in a barrel on the beach. They want to keep her as a pet, but they soon realize Julie is no ordinary pig. She can sniff out treasure! What happens if Barracuda Bill, the greediest and meanest pirate who ever sailed the seas, hears about Julie’s special talent?

The Jolley-Rogers and the Monster’s Gold

Ahoy there, shipmates! Join Jim Lad and Matilda as they sail the seven seas (and the coast of Dull-on-Sea) in search of treasure in this latest adventure from Jonny Duddle featuring the Jolley-Rogers. When Matilda discovers a treasure map inside an old bottle, she shows it to the Jolley-Rogers and they all set sail to find the mysterious island on the map. Unfortunately, they end up in the belly of the dastardly Pirate Cruncher! Can Matilda and the rest of the Jolly-Rogers rescue themselves before it is too late? Or will they end up trapped there forever? Expect adventure, laughs, and perhaps an almighty sneeze.

There Was an Old Pirate Who Swallowed a Fish

There was an old pirate . . . who swallowed a fish, a bird, a map, some gold, and even a whole pirate ship! Will the Old Pirate sink to the bottom of the deep, dark sea? Yo ho ho! Watch his belly grow! Jennifer Ward’s take on the “Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” song is perfectly matched with Steve Gray’s zany digital illustrations.

Pirate Pete’s Talk like a Pirate

Following the success of Pirate Pete and Pirate Pete’s Giant Adventure comes a new book by the celebrated brother-and-sister team of Doug and Kim Kennedy. In this new adventure, Pete has a wonderful new ship, but no crew. But not just any crew will do. One by one Pete interviews his potential crew, and one by one they get the boot! Whoever will he find to help him sail the high seas? A hilarious and fun-to-read-aloud book that will have every child talking like a pirate.

Captain Jack and the Pirates

Jack, Zack, and Caspar are building a ship—on the beach, out of sand. When they set sail on their imaginary adventure, Jack spies an enemy pirate ship nearby. They chase after the pirates, but a storm wrecks their ship and sweeps them up on a desert island. The island isn’t totally deserted, though—their pirate enemies are there too. Just as the boys discover the pirates’ treasure (an array of delicious desserts), the pirates (their parents) capture them. But these pirates are friendly—they’re willing to share the treasure, and they throw in some ice cream just for good measure!

The Pirates Next Door

Meet the Jolley-Rogers — a pirate family who is moving to Dull-on-Sea, a quiet seaside town, while they fix up their ship. This unusual family soon has the whole neighborhood gossiping. Defying the grown-ups, Matilda becomes friends with young pirate Jim Lad. When the JolleyRogers return to sea, the town realizes that they were wrong to assume the worst when it is discovered that the pirates have buried treasure in everyone’s yard. The neighbors are thrilled, but Matilda is sad to have lost her new friend, until she discovers her own treasure — a pen pal!

Pirate’s Perfect Pet

Big, brave Captain Crave can check off most items on the handy Be Your Best Buccaneer checklist. He has a pirate ship, an eye patch, courage and daring, and more. Only one thing is missing: Captain Crave doesn’t have a pet. Arrr! Shuck me an oyster and set sail for land! The captain and his crew race and chase critters of every size and shape, from the beach to a farm to the zoo to a pet shop, causing a commotion wherever they go. But just when all seems lost, the search party stumbles on the most perfectly perfect pet for Captain Crave. Has he finally met his match? Aye-aye!

Teaching the pirate unit is SO MUCH FUN for little learners as they explore pirates. It’s even more fun for us as we get to watch little minds learn and grow! Grab some fun and exciting pirate books to use with your pirate unit and explore all about pirates.
